COMPANY OF RUNNERS cordially invite you to join us for the 2022 running of the prestigious Stour Valley Marathon. Your challenge should you choose to accept it, is to self-navigate on a marathon trail course (approximately 27 “country” miles) following the highways, byways, trails and tracks around the Stour Valley using the Stour Valley Path, St Edmund’s Way and the Essex Way.
This will be a covid secure race. TRA permit is pending. Clearly 2021 and 2020 were majorly disrupted due to Covid-19 and opening entries eight months prior to the race means we have no way of knowing what the racing world will bring in summer 2022, and our race plans may still change. So please note our cancellation, refund and Covid-19 policies detailed below.
At present we will offer 150 places. Once we hit this level we will close entries until closer to the date/approx March 2022. Depending on Covid-19 circumstances we may then offer further entries. Keep an eye on Facebook and this webpage. No waiting list will be kept. Due to time required to sort admin, start windows and briefing instructions, no transfers nor refunds will be made after 03 June 2022. Participant instruction briefings will be sent between 04-11 June. There will be no entries on race day. As per TRA rules, runners are not permitted to run with dogs. This event is held under UK athletics rules. We do not permit participants aged under 18.
The course is a mixture of surfaces so trail shoes are recommended. There will be four checkpoints on the route approximately seven miles apart, offering water, sweets and crisps, however we would encourage you to be as self sufficient with fluid and fuel as possible. Covid-19 guidance at the time will shape this provision.
The race should only be attempted by runners who have completed a half marathon or greater distance race with training beyond 20 miles. The cut-off is eight hours, but we still expect you to be confident long-distance runners who can manage trail running in what can often be hot conditions. Participants should also be comfortable with following navigation instructions, GPS files or by reading maps. The course is slightly different to that used prior to 2021.
This race makes excellent training for either the SVP100 or SVP50 ultra races which take place in August organised by our friend Matthew Hearne. Please also note that we hold the Stour Valley Half Marathon on the same day as the marathon. We will try to offer recce group runs in advance of the race.
Medic support will be provided: supplier still to be finalised.

Covid-19 policy: we will offer 150 entries initially. Then closer to the date we will try to offer further entries. We will not keep a waiting list; this was tricky and massively time consuming to administer last year. We will post on Facebook (CofR page and the event feed) and add a note on the webpage if we re-open entries. We would expect this to be known approx March 2022 which would give us 3 months prior to the race. As I know you’ll appreciate, we are in an ever-changing environment, thus race guidance is constantly changing, thus our race plans may change. We will follow all Covid-19 race guidance as it stands at the time of the race-which led to a successful 2021 race.
